The New Semester at Sea (for engineers)
Semester at Sea is pleased to announce the launch of its first short-term semester voyage entitled "Engineering a New Tomorrow". Engineering students and students from all majors will spend 26 days doing course work on the MV Explorer and field work in 7 countries, including an exploration of the Panama Canal Expansion Project. With a curriculum designed around the United Nations Millennium Development Goals of improving quality of life in eight key areas, students will build global skills by working in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with partners in each country, working to understand the context of engineering problems in each place, and applying technology appropriate to cultural context.
Triangle Fraternity is pleased to promote the 2011 voyage as a partner in higher education focused on engineering in today's global society. The May 20 – June 15 voyage is open to actives, as well as alumni who are considered life-long learners.
"Access to water and sanitation is one of the most pressing problems facing the world today. We know that 874 million people lack access to safe water and more than 2.5 billion people around the world lack access to safe sanitation," said Garrick Louis, associate professor of environmental and water resources at the University of Virginia. "This voyage… is a great idea because it brings together the people who will actually be responsible for and actively engaged in solving these problems and to see examples of the problems in countries where they are most pressing."
